Providing Expert Spinal Care Close to Home

Mar 1, 2022

Spine-400-x-350If you’re experiencing constant neck and back pain, it may be related to problems with the spine. San Ramon Regional Medical Center offers advanced treatments to help patients find lasting relief from conditions ranging from lower back pain to spinal stenosis. Our doctors review all back pain relief options from physical therapy to non-surgical and surgical procedures to help you find a way to restore quality of life.

Often the first step in treating spine pain is to explore a range of non-surgical treatment options such as:

  • Pain Management – We offer several ways to manage pain, including biofeedback, medication, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and counseling.
  • Injections – Injections may offer temporary relief based on the type and location of the pain. We offer epidural steroid injections, cortisone steroid injections, facet joint injections and injections to the nerve root sacroiliac.
  • Physical Therapy – A physical therapist may help strengthen the muscles around the spine with passive and/or active treatments, stretching and exercises for low impact and/or strengthening.

If non-surgical options are not effective, some conditions may require surgery, and injuries may require surgery first.

San Ramon Regional Medical Center has seven highly-trained spine surgeons credentialed on our medical staff who can help determine surgical treatment options for spine care. Our high-quality spine doctors are Dr. Hieu Ball, Dr. Lawrence Dickinson, Dr. Nguyen Do, Dr. Saqib Hasan, Dr. Julie Long, Dr. Robert Rovner, and Dr. Vikram Talwar. Surgical options may include:

  • Robotic-Assisted Spine Surgery
  • Endoscopic Spine Surgery
  • Laminectomy/Discectomy
  • Microdiscectomy
  • Spinal Fusion
  • Treatment of Spine Trauma
  • Treatment of Spinal Cord Injury
  • Hardware Revision

San Ramon Regional Medical Center is proud to be a leader in acquiring and utilizing the latest technology in surgery, providing a higher level of care for patients close to home.

Saqib Hasan, M.D., Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, recently performed the first endoscopic robotic-assisted lumbar fusion in California at San Ramon Regional Medical Center. This advanced procedure combines endoscopic and robotic-guided technologies. It allows the surgeon to operate through smaller incisions versus larger surgical dissection which is common for some complex spine surgeries such as lumbar fusions.

“Endoscopic techniques really represent a paradigm shift in spine surgery. By leveraging these technologies, surgeons can treat spinal problems in a truly minimally invasive way. By using advanced miniature cameras (endoscopes) and computer-based robotic arms to provide a more targeted and accurate approach, we can achieve similar results to more traditional open procedures with less pain and quicker recovery,” said Dr. Hasan, who specializes in endoscopic spine surgery at San Ramon Regional Medical Center.

Minimally-invasive, endoscopic and robotic-assisted spine surgery allows surgeons to treat spine conditions by operating through small incisions along the spine, which may lead to smaller scars. Other patient benefits may include shorter hospital stays, less tissue damage, reduced trauma to the body and less risk of infection and post-operative pain.

“We are proud of our spine surgery program and we are committed to providing the highest quality of care for our patients,” said Ann Lucena, CEO of San Ramon Regional Medical Center. “Robotic technology not only helps improve accuracy, reproducibility and efficiency in complex spine surgery, but it also significantly reduces radiation exposure to the patient, staff and surgeon as an added safety enhancement.”
